The live-action remake of “Moana” is coming together, with Disney revealing its cast list on Wednesday, 12 June.
Portraying the role of the eponymous Polynesian princess will be Catherine Laga’aia, an up-and-coming actress who hails from Sydney, Australia.
Speaking to Disney’s official website, the 17-year-old star expressed her excitement about landing the lead role: “I’m really excited to embrace this character because ‘Moana’ is one of my favourites.”
Acknowledging her own Pacific Island heritage, Laga’aia added, “I’m honoured to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”
In addition to Laga’aia, the cast will also include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising his role as Maui, John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
“Moana” is scheduled to be released in theatres globally on 10 July 2026, nearly ten years after its animated counterpart made its debut.
